What would Memorial Day look like if we commemorated all the victims of war, and not just the military fallen from our own country? What would it be like to honor all the dead and acknowledge all the destruction wrought around the world by U.S. military actions?
Join us to explore this theme, as we pair Americans, mostly military veterans, with speakers who have been on the receiving end of U.S. military aggression.

I’ll be co-hosting this poetry reading and conversation with Hazel Clayton whom I worked closely with as co-Poet Laureate of Altadena for two years (2018 to 2020) and whom I’ve known for many more years as poet and sister. We both recognize the importance of this event and the gathering of these black and Asian poets in our community with whom we’ve been in solidarity with for many years already as we have built and continue to build a better world alongside each other. There are many more black and Asian poets I wish we could have included in the reading because we have been laying these foundations in our communities together over the years but we were limited due to time. Maybe we will have a Part 2 in the near future to add more poets. Please join us for this reading & conversation! Date: Thursday, April 29, 2021 at 7 p.m. Zoom ID: 860 1770 7747

Although her poetry has been published in literary journals and anthologies she is best known for her voice and delivery style. Hunter has been an outspoken advocate on issues related to homelessness and mental illness for more than twenty years.
Teresa Mei Chuc, author of three collections of poetry, Red Thread (Fithian Press, 2012), Keeper of the Winds (FootHills Publishing, 2014) and Invisible Light (Many Voices Press, 2018), was born in Saigon, Viet Nam and immigrated to the U.S. under political asylum as refugees of war with her mother and brother shortly after the American war in Viet Nam while her father remained in a Vietcong "reeducation" prison camp for nine years. Since the age of two, Teresa grew up in the Tongva village of Hahamongna (Pasadena, California) where she still lives and loves. This fall on the campus of Woodbury University in Burbank—“The First Annual Page and Stage Conference: Bringing Together the Publishing Communities of Los Angeles” to be held on October 25, 2019.
https://www.moriaonline.com/program-page-and-stage-conference
¨On Friday, October 25, 2019, MORIA Literary Magazine—the national, online, literary magazine of Woodbury University—together with the Writing Department and the College of Liberal Arts are hosting a professional conference on the Woodbury campus in Burbank, which will gather representatives of the various literary magazines, journals, presses, publishing houses, and reading series in the greater Los Angeles area for one day of panels, workshops, book displays, and conversation. Our Keynote Speaker will be noted poet and essayist, Dana Gioia, former head of the National Endowment of the Arts and, more recently, the California State Poet Laureate.¨
Teresa Mei Chuc, founder and editor-in-chief of Shabda Press, will be on a panel of publishers to discuss the following topic:
Poet Claudia Rankine has written recently about the “white imaginary”—which is to say, a non-specific category of “whiteness” that erases racial identifiers and instead defines “white” as a catch-all term embedded in white supremacism (invested in the “I don’t see color” defense). Working with this concept, poet Camille Rankine rejects calls for racial unity and for empathy—long the hallmarks of white ally-ship—as weapons of whiteness and tools of the colonizer. Instead, she advocates for a kind of radical listening to “otherness”:
I reach toward a sense of comprehension, but I cannot fully arrive at it. I cannot contain this knowledge because it isn’t mine to hold. What I come to understand is that I will never know what it’s like, not really. What I feel is not what the other feels—what I feel is the gulf between what I know and what they know. It can be a devastating chasm of a feeling. What if, instead of empathy, it is this sort of understanding that we seek? What if, instead of attempting to step into the place of an other, I step to face them, feeling the distance that separates their life from mine, ready to heed the words they offer into the space between us? (Camille Rankine,“The Known Unknown: Persona, Empathy, and the Limits of the Imagination,”Poetry Foundation Blog, April 29, 2019).
How do publishers and curators of words respond to what is “other” than the dominant culture—to racial differences, to marginalized sexual orientations, to class and gender differences—in literary content they are entrusted with? how do we package and publicize this difference? if we are editors and curators of color, how do we envision our role within these various communities? if we are white, cis-gendered editors and curators, how do we listen to authors of color or to LGBTQA+ authors when they approach us with concerns about our handling of this difference? What is our role as responsible stewards of diverse content(s) in literary culture?

Teresa will also be reading a few poems at the Rattle Reading Series on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at 11 a.m. in Wrightwood. http://www.wrightwoodlitfest.com/
Workshop Description:
Nature as Metaphor
Nature is a source of inspiration for many writers. How is nature used as a metaphor to express human desires and experience? In this workshop, we will look at examples of poetry that uses nature as a metaphor to express our humanity in microcosm or macrocosm, on a cellular level or on a universal level or somewhere in between. What do we see in ourselves when we look at nature, a dandelion, a mushroom, an oak tree…the mycelium network? Even nature’s colors invoke in us deep emotions. How is the natural consciousness of the Earth connected to our human consciousness? Attendees will write their own poems inspired by the surrounding nature as a metaphor for some aspect of human life and experience, personal or universal.

R148. The Asian Face of War, Gaining Perspectives from Both Sides: A Look at WWII, Vietnam, and Korea. (Gregory Dunne, Ross Cantalupo, Mong Lan, Kyoko Yoshida, Teresa Mei Chuc) How does literature remain conversant with the history of war in Asia? Why does it remain vital and relevant? Seventy years after WWII, and forty years after the fall of Saigon, writers whose work was published in Kyoto Journal and who write out of an awareness of war gather to address questions of war and literature’s ongoing response to it. Five writers, some based outside the United States, speak to Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese literature in light of history and war.

Levantine Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA, Thursday, December 4, 2014, 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Poets on War and People, An Evening of Spoken Word. In conjunction with the new exhibition War and People: Art, Exile and the Middle East, three Los Angeles-based poets and a Middle Eastern American actor read from two recent collections of poetry, Dear Darwish and With Our Eyes Wide Open, that explore the effects of war and exile on people in South Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.
With Our Eyes Wide Open: Poems of the New American Century, focuses on the impact of recent wars on populations around the world especially the U.S. wars in Southeast Asia (Vietnam etc.), Central America, and the Middle East. This international anthology of poetry explores the impact of the United States in wars as well as upon the "nobodies"-outcasts, immigrants, the working class: "They [the poets]...represent an emerging poetic consciousness which is helping to define and shape the imagination and language of the 21st Century." Using a call-and-response pattern, the poems look at the impact of the United States' wars in Korea, Vietnam, Central America, and Iraq, on lives. Vietnamese-American poet Teresa Mei Chuc, and Julia Stein read from their own poems and a Middle Eastern American actor read some of the Middle Eastern poets in the anthology from Turkey, Oman, Egyptian-American, Morocco, Iraq, and Chechnya.

"And we'll have a feminist political poetry fest from the new international anthology "With Our Eyes Wide Open: Poems of the New American Century". It describes the impact of the United States in waging wars, as well as the impact on the so-called “nobodies,”—the outcasts, immigrants, and the working class. Teresa Mei Chuc, who was born in Saigon, writes poems that often describe the long-lasting effects of war on the Vietnamese land and people. She'll be joined by Julia Stein whose fifth book of poetry "What Were They Like" describe the lives of women in Iraq and the U.S.
We promise you this won't be a downer! These poems are intense AND life affirming. And so are Julia Stein and Teresa Mei Chuc.
