I'm currently rereading Alchemy of the Word : Writers Talk About Writing for inspiration. I love this book.
trochemoche by Luis J. Rodriguez
I heard Luis J. Rodriguez read from his book, trochemoche, at Avenue 50 Studio in Los Angeles. I love the poems in the book. Here is one of my favorites, "Meeting the Animal in Washington Square Park."
HERE, BULLET by Brian Turner
I just finished reading HERE, BULLET by Brian Turner. It is a moving, powerful and visceral book of poetry. One of my favorite books. I highly recommend it!
Here is the title poem from the book:
If a body is what you want
then here is bone and gristle and flesh.
Here is the clavicle-snapped wish,
the aorta’s opened valves, the leap
thought makes at the synaptic gap.
Here is the adrenaline rush you crave,
that inexorable flight, that insane puncture
into heat and blood. And I dare you to finish
what you’ve started. Because here, Bullet,
here is where I complete the word you bring
hissing through the air, here is where I moan
the barrel’s cold esophagus, triggering
my tongue’s explosives for the rifling I have
inside of me, each twist of the round
spun deeper, because here, Bullet,
here is where the world ends, every time.

Happy Birthday, James Baldwin!
So true...and Happy Birthday, James Baldwin.
"Perhaps the whole root of our trouble, the human trouble, is that we will sacrifice all the beauty of our lives, will imprison ourselves in totems, taboos, crosses, blood sacrifices, steeples, mosques, races, armies, flags, nations, in order to deny the fact of death, the only fact we have. It seems to me that one ought to rejoice in the fact of death―ought to decide, indeed, to earn one's death by confronting with passion the conundrum of life.” ― James Baldwin, who was born on this day in 1924

My friend, R.G. Cantalupo (a.k.a. Ross Canton), poet, writer & Vietnam War veteran, was featured on Talk Vietnam in this heart-moving video about his journey back to Vietnam. Cantalupo shares his poetry and discusses the consequences of war and healing through writing poetry and reconciliation.
Poet and Writer Richard Wright
This summer I read Black Boy , an autobiography by Richard Wright. It is one of the most heart-moving, brave and beautiful books that I have ever read. And then I discovered Richard Wright's poetry, "Between the World and Me" and "I Have Seen Black Hands." Richard Wright is one of my favorite poets and writers of all time.
